The hummingbird family is a diverse group consisting of 363 species found exclusively in the Americas. Among them, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird stands out as a charismatic visitor to backyard feeders and forest wildflowers alike. These birds are easily identified by their shimmering green feathers and the brilliant, iridescent red throat patches on the males, known as a gorget.

While 24 different hummingbird species have been documented within the United States, the Ruby-throated is unique as the only species that breeds east of the Mississippi River. Its expansive range stretches through the Midwest into Texas and across much of southern Canada. During the winter, these spirited birds migrate south to join other tropical species in Central America.

Aerodynamics and Physical Proportions

A hovering Ruby-throated Hummingbird flaps its wings approximately 50 times per second. Hummingbirds are the only avian family capable of sustained hovering, thanks to specialized shoulder joints that allow their wings to rotate in a horizontal figure-eight motion. This unique anatomy generates lift on both the forward and backward strokes, granting them the agility to fly in any direction, including backward and upside down.

In terms of mass, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird weighs roughly the same as a penny. Males average 3 grams, while females are slightly larger at approximately 3.5 grams. Within the broader context of the hummingbird family, they are considered mid-sized. For comparison, the Bee Hummingbird weighs about 2 grams, while the Giant Hummingbird can reach up to 24 grams—roughly the weight of a single AA battery.

Endurance and Migratory Feats

Despite their tiny stature, these birds are elite endurance athletes. In the autumn, some individuals travel from southeastern Canada all the way to Costa Rica. Many perform a grueling nonstop flight across the Gulf of Mexico, covering 500 miles of open water in a single stretch. To prepare, the birds double their body weight by building fat reserves from nectar and insects, allowing them to travel up to 300 miles on just one gram of stored fat.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have also developed a symbiotic relationship with native plants like jewelweed. The orange flowers of the jewelweed bloom just as the birds begin their southern migration, providing a critical energy source. In return, the birds act as primary pollinators; research suggests the plant has even evolved more curved nectar spurs over time to ensure more effective pollen transfer during the birds' visits.

Metabolism and Survival Tactics

Hummingbirds possess the highest metabolic rate by weight of any vertebrate: A Ruby-throat’s heart races as fast as 20 beats a second, and its resting body temperature sits at about 102 Fahrenheit. It takes a lot of energy to maintain such an intense pace, which is why a Ruby-throat can consume up to three times their body weight in food in a day. When flowers are scarce in early spring, they often rely on the sugary sap from holes drilled by Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, frequently nesting near these "wells" for a steady food supply.

To conserve energy during cold snaps or migratory breaks, the birds utilize a specialized adaptation called torpor. This is essentially a state of short-term hibernation where the bird dramatically lowers its body temperature and heart rate. This physiological slowdown allows them to preserve vital fat stores that would otherwise be burned off overnight.

Nesting Habits and Territoriality

The responsibility of building the nest and raising the young falls entirely to the female. She constructs a tiny, flexible cup out of plant fibers and spider silk, which allows the nest to expand as the chicks grow. She camouflages the exterior with lichen and lines the interior with soft plant down. The resulting nest is roughly the size of a large coin, designed to hold eggs no bigger than a small bean.

During the breeding season, male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds become aggressively territorial. They will chase away intruders of any size, including much larger raptors, using angry chirps and aerial maneuvers. If a rival hummingbird does not retreat, the encounter can escalate to physical strikes using bills and claws. This protective behavior is also commonly seen around high-value food sources like garden feeders.

Courtship and Aerial Displays

Males attract potential mates through a combination of visual brilliance and daring acrobatics. A male will first flash his iridescent red gorget to catch a female's attention before performing a series of U-shaped "pendulum" dives. He may climb as high as 50 feet into the air before swooping down at high speeds. If the female is interested in his performance, she may respond with a specific call to indicate her receptiveness, leading to a closer aerial dance of rapid side-to-side movements.
