The artistic features of Wuxi Liuqing Bamboo Carving are distinctive, and its technical system is constantly improving and developing with the changes of the times. In the early stage, the themes of Wuxi bamboo carving were mainly concentrated on the inscriptions of calligraphy and stone rubbings. The carvers integrated the artistic charm of calligraphy into bamboo carving, making the carved characters have both the rigidity of calligraphy and the texture of bamboo. Each stroke was exquisitely carved, showing a strong cultural heritage. With the passage of time, Wuxi bamboo carving gradually expanded from a single calligraphy inscription to a combination of calligraphy and painting, and carved paintings became an important part of its artistic expression. The carvers were proficient in capturing the essence of classical Chinese paintings and the characteristics of brushwork, and through their skilled carving techniques, they vividly reproduced the artistic conception and charm of classical paintings on the bamboo surface. The works were elegant and vivid, as if the paintings were alive. After 1949, Wuxi Liuqing Bamboo Carving ushered in a new stage of development. The craft broke through the limitations of simple shallow carving in the past and gradually integrated relief, openwork, three-dimensional carving and other techniques. These techniques complement each other and are integrated into a unique artistic form. While focusing on the inheritance and development of Liuqing shallow carving, Wuxi bamboo carving also absorbed the essence of other bamboo carving techniques, forming a more diverse and rich technical system. This evolution not only enhanced the expressive ability of Wuxi bamboo carving but also made it have a broader development space, further consolidating its position as an important branch in the tradition of Jiangnan bamboo carving.
